What to Expect in Therapy

Therapy is a collaborative process tailored to your individual needs. Sessions last approximately one hour and can be conducted in-person at our warm and inviting Pickering office, or virtually via a secure online platform. Fees are $155 per session, with coverage available from many different insurance providers.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • A supportive starting point: We’ll begin by exploring what brings you to therapy and what you’re hoping to work on, in a safe and respectful space.

  • Individualized focus: Sessions are guided by your goals and concerns, whether that involves skill-building, emotional processing or deeper exploration.

  • Ongoing support: Therapy evolves as you do, with sessions adapting to what feels most helpful and relevant at each stage.

You are always in control of the pace and direction of therapy.

Therapeutic Approach & Areas of Focus

Our approach to individual therapy is warm, trauma-informed and evidence-based. We work collaboratively with clients to create a space that feels safe, supportive and grounded. Therapy is tailored to each client’s unique experiences and needs, with care taken to move at a pace that feels manageable and respectful.

Trauma & Post-Traumatic Stress

Trauma can come from a single event or a prolonged experience, including those from childhood. Therapy can help you process the emotional and physical responses connected to trauma and reduce the impact of distressing memories, thoughts and emotions. We use evidence-based approaches, including trauma-focused talk therapy and EMDR.

Depression

Depression can be situational or longer-term and may affect mood, motivation, sleep and interest in daily life. Therapy provides a supportive space to explore contributing factors and develop coping strategies to ease emotional distress and reconnect with what matters to you.

Anxiety

Occasional worry is a normal part of life, but when anxiety begins to interfere with your quality of life such as work, relationships, or daily functioning, therapy can help. Together, we focus on understanding triggers, thoughts, emotions and physical responses, while building practical strategies to reduce anxiety’s impact.

Grief & Bereavement

Grief can bring intense and complex emotions following the loss of someone important. Therapy offers a compassionate space to process loss, work through feelings such as sadness, anger or guilt and support healing over time.

Feeling Overwhelmed or Emotionally Depleted

When stress builds over time, it can leave you feeling exhausted, disconnected or unable to cope the way you once did. Therapy can help you slow down, identify what’s contributing to the overwhelm and develop supportive strategies to restore balance and emotional energy.

Significant Life Changes

Life transitions — whether expected or unexpected — can bring uncertainty, stress and emotional upheaval. Therapy provides a supportive space to process change, adjust to new circumstances and navigate the next chapter with greater clarity and confidence.

Relationship Challenges

Difficulties in relationships can affect how you feel about yourself and others. Individual therapy offers a space to explore patterns, improve communication, strengthen boundaries and better understand your needs within relationships — whether with a partner, family member or others in your life.

Suicidal Thoughts & Self-Harm

Experiencing suicidal thoughts or urges to self-harm can feel frightening and isolating. Individual therapy provides a safe, non-judgmental space to talk openly about these experiences, understand what’s driving them and develop support and coping strategies that prioritize safety, stability and care.

Physical Injuries & Health Crises

Physical injury, illness or sudden health changes can affect emotional well-being just as much as the body. Therapy can support individuals as they cope with pain, loss of function, changes in identity or the emotional impact of a health crisis, helping them adjust and find ways to move forward with support.

Take the First Step

Reaching out for support can feel daunting — especially if you’re used to managing things on your own. Starting therapy is a meaningful step toward caring for your mental and emotional well-being.
