EMDR Therapy in Pickering

Some experiences can stay with us long after they’re over — showing up as distressing memories, strong emotional reactions, physical sensations or a sense of being “stuck.” EMDR therapy offers a structured, evidence-based approach to help process these experiences in a way that feels safe and supported.

At Rouge Valley Counselling, we use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) when past experiences continue to affect the present, even when you’ve tried to move forward.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is a research-supported therapy that helps the brain process unprocessed or “stuck” memories. During EMDR sessions, bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or other forms of alternating stimulation) is used while briefly focusing on aspects of a memory.

This process supports the brain’s natural ability to reprocess experiences, allowing memories to feel less distressing and less disruptive over time.

EMDR is widely used in trauma treatment and is also effective for anxiety, grief and other concerns connected to past experiences.

Is EMDR Therapy Right For You?

EMDR therapy may be a good fit if you’re experiencing:

  • Distressing or intrusive memories

  • Strong emotional or physical reactions tied to past events

  • Trauma or post-traumatic stress symptoms

  • Anxiety that feels connected to earlier experiences

  • Difficulty letting go of past events despite insight or talk therapy

  • A sense of being emotionally “stuck” or easily triggered

You do not need to have a single, clearly defined traumatic event to benefit from EMDR. It can also be helpful for long-standing or cumulative experiences.

How EMDR Therapy Can Help

Through EMDR therapy, you may begin to:

  • Reduce the emotional intensity of distressing memories

  • Process past experiences in a safe, structured way

  • Feel less triggered in the present

  • Develop a greater sense of emotional balance and stability

  • Move forward with increased clarity and resilience

EMDR does not require you to relive events in detail or talk extensively about them. The focus is on how experiences are stored in the nervous system and how they can be processed safely.

What to Expect in EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy follows a clear, structured process and is always guided by your readiness and comfort. Sessions last approximately one hour and can be conducted in-person at our warm and inviting Pickering office, or virtually via a secure online platform. Fees are $155 per session.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Preparation and stabilization: We begin by building coping skills and ensuring you feel safe and supported before any memory processing begins.

  • Collaborative goal setting: Together, we identify which experiences or symptoms you’d like to work on and move at a pace that feels manageable.

  • Memory processing: EMDR is introduced gradually, with ongoing attention to emotional safety and regulation.

  • Integration and support: Sessions include time to reflect, ground and integrate changes as they occur.

At Rouge Valley Counselling, you are always in control of the process, and EMDR is adapted to your individual needs.

Therapeutic Approach & Areas of Focus
