Child & Teen Therapy in Pickering
Growing up can be challenging. Children and teens may struggle with emotions, behaviours, relationships, school pressures or changes at home — often without having the words to fully explain what they’re feeling.

Child and teen therapy offers a supportive, age-appropriate space where young people can express themselves, build coping skills and feel understood. Using Play Therapy, we explore emotions, label feelings, and create strategies to process and cope with big feelings.

Therapy also supports caregivers by helping them better understand their child’s experiences and emotional needs.

Is Therapy Right For Your Child or Teen?
Therapy may be a good fit if your child or teen is experiencing:
-
Anxiety, worry or frequent feelings of being overwhelmed
-
Low mood, withdrawal or changes in behaviour
-
Difficulty coping with stress at school or with peers
-
Emotional responses related to trauma or distressing experiences
-
School avoidance
-
Grief, loss or major family changes
-
Challenges with emotional regulation or behaviour
-
Difficulty adjusting to injury, illness or health changes
-
Relationship challenges with family members or peers
Children do not need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Support can be helpful at any stage when emotions, behaviours or transitions feel difficult to manage.

What Parents Can Expect During Child and Teen Therapy
Therapy is a collaborative process that supports both the child or teen and their caregivers. Sessions last approximately one hour and should ideally be conducted in-person at our warm and inviting Pickering office. Fees are $155 per session, and covered by most insurance providers.
Here’s what you can expect:
-
A supportive starting point: Therapy begins with getting to know your child or teen and understanding what brings them to therapy, in a space that feels safe, respectful and age-appropriate.
-
Individualized focus: Sessions are tailored to your child’s needs and may include talk therapy, creative or expressive approaches and skill-building strategies.
-
Caregiver collaboration: When appropriate, caregivers are involved to support understanding, communication and progress outside of sessions.
-
Ongoing support: Therapy evolves over time, adapting to developmental changes and what feels most helpful for your child or teen.
The pace of therapy is always guided by your child’s comfort and readiness.
Therapeutic Approach & Areas of Focus
Rouge Valley Counselling offers therapy for children aged 4 and older. Our approach to child and teen therapy is warm, trauma-informed and evidence-based. We work collaboratively with children, youth and caregivers to create a space that feels safe, supportive and grounded.
Areas of focus may include:
Anxiety & Worry
Anxiety in children and teens can show up as excessive worry, avoidance, physical complaints or difficulty separating from caregivers. Therapy helps young people understand anxiety, recognize triggers and build coping skills that support confidence and emotional regulation.
Emotional Regulation & Big Emotions
Some children and teens experience emotions that feel intense, overwhelming or hard to manage. Therapy supports the development of emotional awareness, coping strategies and skills for managing strong feelings in healthier ways.
Behavioural Changes
Behavioural concerns may include impulsivity, defiance, withdrawal or difficulty following expectations. Therapy focuses on understanding the underlying emotions and stressors driving behaviour and supporting positive, age-appropriate change.
School-Related Stress & Academic Pressures
School can be a major source of stress for children and teens. Therapy can help with challenges related to academic pressure, social dynamics, transitions, performance anxiety or changes in motivation and engagement.
Self-Esteem & Identity Development
Children and teens are developing a sense of who they are. Therapy provides a supportive space to explore self-esteem, confidence, identity and feelings of belonging, especially during times of change or uncertainty.
Peer Relationships & Social Skills
Difficulties with friendships, social anxiety, bullying or feeling left out can significantly impact emotional well-being. Therapy supports social confidence, communication skills and healthy peer relationships.
Family Transitions & Change
Events such as separation or divorce, blending families, moves or changes in routines can be confusing and stressful for young people. Therapy helps children and teens process these changes and adjust with support.
Grief & Loss
Children and teens experience grief differently than adults. Therapy offers a compassionate, age-appropriate space to process loss, express emotions and support healing over time.
Trauma & Stressful Experiences
Exposure to traumatic or highly stressful experiences can affect emotional regulation, behaviour and sense of safety. Therapy supports children and youth in processing experiences and building coping strategies in a trauma-informed way.
